With NBA Top Shot, CryptoKitties and Flow, how Dapper Labs made its mark on web3

Dapper Labs: A Leader in the NFT Market

Established in 2018, the Canadian firm Dapper Labs has swiftly emerged as a prominent player in the NFT (non-fungible token) sector, setting benchmarks for innovation and leadership within the industry. The company’s ascent is largely attributed to its flagship projects, CryptoKitties and NBA Top Shot, in addition to its Flow blockchain network. This article delves into the factors contributing to Dapper Labs’ success.

Navigating the Web3 Landscape

The web3 space is filled with both genuine projects and opportunistic impostors. Amidst this chaos, NBA Top Shot has surfaced as one of the most sought-after digital assets, currently holding the title of the top decentralized application, or “dapp,” globally. The success of NBA Top Shot can be closely linked to Dapper Labs’ innovative approach, which embodies the essence of a forward-thinking brand in the web3 domain. The company emphasizes creativity and adheres to fundamental principles such as transparency, equitable access to information, and decentralized ownership of digital assets.

NBA Top Shot: A Unique Marketplace for Fans

NBA Top Shot serves as a specialized marketplace for NFTs that celebrate NBA moments, featuring notable players and teams. Users can buy individual NFTs or purchase them in packs, which evokes the thrill reminiscent of opening physical NBA trading card packs to discover rare cards. Jayne Peressini, Dapper Labs’ vice president of growth, highlights that the platform’s marketing strategy plays a crucial role in its popularity. “We aimed for an experience that resonates with fans’ connections to their favorite teams and players, ensuring the process remains engaging rather than overwhelming,” she explains. “Fans watching a game shouldn’t have to invest hours deciphering how to acquire an NFT.”

Marketing Strategy Focused on Fan Engagement

The marketing tactics employed by Top Shot tap into the emotional connection fans have with basketball. The platform allows users to demonstrate their fandom through NFT purchases without inundating them with complex technical jargon. Peressini observes that many brands tend to use intricate language when discussing web3, which can alienate potential customers. “When brands become overly enthusiastic about their entry into web3, they risk alienating users by making their products appear complicated and inaccessible,” she states.

CryptoKitties: The Second Most Popular Dapp

In addition to NBA Top Shot, Dapper Labs is also known for CryptoKitties, a web3-based game where players can collect and breed digital cats. The company claims this game ranks as the second-most popular dapp globally. CryptoKitties operates on the premise that digital items can hold the same rarity and value as coveted physical trading cards or art pieces. This concept has proven successful, with approximately 2 million CryptoKitties currently listed for sale on OpenSea, a leading NFT marketplace. One notable CryptoKitty, named Dragon, previously sold for an astonishing 600 ETH, equivalent to nearly $1.8 million.

Beyond Profit: The True Purpose of NFTs

While launching NFTs can indeed yield profits, Peressini emphasizes that financial gain should not be the primary motivation. “NFTs should serve more than just another revenue stream. The backlash faced by NFTs in gaming illustrates how they can resemble microtransactions, which is not the intended purpose of NFTs or web3,” she explains. “It’s crucial to concentrate on the objectives you wish to achieve before considering commercialization.”

The Eco-Friendly Flow Blockchain

Dapper Labs is also renowned for its Flow blockchain, which is designed to be both developer-friendly and environmentally sustainable. The blockchain technology is often criticized for its high energy consumption associated with cryptocurrency mining. However, Peressini argues that Flow is a greener alternative. “Flow was engineered for efficiency and sustainability, addressing concerns about environmental impact,” she asserts. Once brands are reassured that their involvement in web3 won’t harm the planet, they can then focus on their goals, such as engaging existing users or attracting new ones, rather than solely on profit-making strategies.

Aligning with Core Web3 Values

Dapper Labs distinguishes itself through its commitment to the core values of web3, which include transparency, equal access to information, and individual empowerment. Digital creator and co-founder of Stationhead, Jace Kay, encapsulates this sentiment, remarking that Dapper Labs operates with legitimacy and authenticity in contrast to larger corporations like Meta.
